A Tour of Brox Farm where we get our Local Produce

For years Evenfall has partnered with Brox Farm to bring you fresh, local, delicious produce in the dishes at Evenfall. Take a look at these pictures from our trip to Brox farm for this weeks pickup and a tour of how they are preparing to get us as much as they can through the New England seasons.

Inside the greenhouses you quickly forget that it is chilly outside, here the various greens we have been featuring on our menu all winter have been growing. They are standing right in front of a bed of Tatsoi, which we have been serving on our Tuna Appetizer this winter.

In addition to growing things for us to serve now, Farmer dave has started seeds to transplant to the fields as soon as he can. Getting a jump start on Mother nature means that we can start bringing you locally grown vegetables sooner than if he planted directly in the fields. he told Chef Scott and I that he plans on using mini green houses over the plants in an attempt to plant them as early as possible.

Throughout our tour it was enlightening to hear about the many ways technology is helping to make farming possible, by saving money spent on water, heat, and space. Here Farmer Dave is showing us the Corn fueled heater he uses in one of the greenhouses to keep it warm enough throughout the winter. He said it cost him nearly $2000 this winter to heat one of them.

Brox Farm is located at 437 Parker Road in Dracut, and at www.farmerdaves.net online, they have a nice CSA program if you are looking for one. It is a great and healthy way to support our local farms. Of course you can always come to Evenfall and support them that way as well.
